The New Power

Montepuez, Cabo Delgado — the discovery that redrew the ruby map.

The Discovery

Found within living memory

In 2009, rubies surfaced near Montepuez — and the gem world moved. What began as a scatter of stones in the bush proved to be the most significant ruby discovery of the modern era.

Within a decade, most of the world's fine rubies were coming out of one corner of East Africa. Burma had held the title for six centuries; Mozambique took a seat at the same table in ten years.

The Ground

Different rock, different fire

Montepuez rubies form in amphibole — not the marble of Mogok. The chemistry carries more iron, which quiets the fluorescence and deepens the red toward crimson.

What the ground gives up in glow, it returns in body: clean crystals, saturated colour, and sizes the old valley rarely yields today.

The Winning

Washed from the gravels

The methods would be familiar to any Mogok miner of a century past: gravel, water, and a practised eye. Alongside the licensed workings, independent diggers still sieve the rivers of Cabo Delgado by hand.

However it is won, every stone passes the same judgement — held to the sun, turned once, and known.

The Stone

Judged beside the old valley

For its first years, Mozambique sold at a discount to the Burmese name. That gap is closing on merit: in 2023, a 55-carat Montepuez stone became the most valuable ruby ever sold at auction.

A young origin, not yet an old name. For the buyer who trusts the eye before the label, that is not a caveat — it is the opportunity.

The House Position

Origin, in writing

A Mozambican ruby the Maison offers carries its origin on paper — laboratory-certified, treatment stated plainly, the unheated stone named as such.

The coast supplies the future. The certificate supplies the proof. A commission deserves both.

The new power, judged by the old standard.
